What Is Car Detailing? A Plain-English Guide

Car detailing is a deep, hand-done clean of your vehicle inside and out — far beyond a car wash. Here's what's included, what it costs, and how long it takes.

Detailing vs. a car wash

A car wash is a quick rinse — usually automated, usually under 10 minutes. Detailing is a multi-hour, hand-done deep clean focused on restoring the car's surfaces, not just rinsing them. A wash makes the outside look better; a detail makes the whole car feel new again.

What's actually done

Exterior
  • Foam pre-wash to lift loose dirt without scratching
  • Hand contact wash using clean mitts and grit guards
  • Wheels, tires, and wheel wells deep-cleaned and dressed
  • Spray wax or sealant for gloss and short-term protection
Interior
  • Compressed air blowout of vents, seams, and crevices
  • Full vacuum of seats, carpets, mats, and trunk
  • Steam clean of plastics, leather, glass, and electronics
  • Door jambs and trunk jambs wiped down

How long it takes

A full detail typically takes 2 to 4 hours. Sedans land on the shorter end; large SUVs, trucks, and vehicles with heavy pet hair or interior soiling take longer. Mobile detailers (like us) come to your home or office, so the only thing you spend is the parking spot.

How much it costs

Pricing scales with vehicle size and condition. For mobile detailing in our area, a Full Detail starts at the sedan tier and goes up for SUVs and large SUVs or trucks. Add-ons like leather conditioning, pet hair removal, or a clay-bar treatment are priced separately. See live pricing on our services page.

How often should you detail?

For most drivers, a full detail every 3 to 6 months keeps the car looking sharp and protects resale value. Heavy commuters, pet owners, and families with young kids usually benefit from a quarterly schedule.
